How to Successfully Innovate During Tumultuous Times

We’re living in times of change. As a small business owner or consultant, you might feel overwhelmed by all the changes. But now’s the time to get out in front of it. I love what author William Pollard said, “Without change there is no innovation, creativity, or incentive for improvement. Those who initiate change will have a better opportunity to manage the change that is inevitable.”

How can you initiate change? How can you come up with innovative solutions that are going to help your clients meet the changes they’re facing in these unprecedented times?

I want to share a simple formula with you that will spark innovation in how you approach your business…

Information + Insight + Inspiration = Innovation

We’ll begin with Information, since that’s the easiest place to get started.

As you look around you today, you can easily find free information at your fingertips. There are free YouTube videos, Facebook lives and you can search on Google for any topic in the world. I find most business owners are already experts in their fields. However, if there are gaps in your knowledge, then now’s the perfect time to fill them. You could learn how to use a new social media platform to market your business, get a new certification in your industry, learn how to use an online coaching platform to teach classes, etc.

Let’s move on to Insight, which is definitely more challenging to acquire.

According to the dictionary, insight is “the capacity to gain an accurate and deep intuitive understanding of a person or thing.” How accurate and deeply intuitive is your understanding of your ideal clients and their situation?

And remember, these aren’t the same ideal clients you had six months ago. Things have changed and they have changed too, sometimes dramatically so. In order to have the insight you need to be innovative, ask yourself:

  • What’s causing my clients the most stress right now?
  • What would they like to see happen in the near feature?
  • What are their hopes and dreams? Have they shifted because of recent events?
  • What’s getting in their way of achieving results?
  • What kind of support do they need to help them feel like they’re moving forward, despite the uncertainty in the world?

You may not know the answers to these questions, that’s okay. What’s not insightful is to hazard a guess. Instead, reach out and talk to both prospects and clients personally. Go into these conversations without an agenda of selling anything, instead dig deep and listen carefully with a willingness to discover new insight on what would be most helpful to your clients now. This is a key element in your ability to innovate, because it will be built on your understanding of what your clients really need from you, rather than a cookie-cutter program that just doesn’t fit anymore.

Information and insight can pave the way to what’s next, Inspiration!

Inspiration is more about your internal state. If recent events have left you feeling discouraged, or stressed it’s pretty difficult to be inspired, even if you have all the information and insight you need. This is where a business coach can often help. They can help remind you about why you started your business in the first place.

To be inspired enough to be innovative, consider your natural gifts, strengths and talents. What previous experience do you have that you could rework into a new innovative offering for your clients? I believe that your backstory has everything to do with what you can offer today.

Consider a few examples:

If you have a human resource background, how can you become a career mentor to help people, even in today’s new fiercely competitive job market, land their next dream job?

If you have a background in the corporate world, where can you fill in the training and coaching gaps for organizations that are downsizing and have no internal experts to turn to?

If you’ve managed big teams in the past, like I have, how can you help small to large size organizations create more dynamic and productive teams?

No matter what your backstory of work history, life experiences or talents and capabilities, I’ve been able to guide my private coaching clients to new heights by removing their blinders so they begin seeing and embracing their lifetime of perspectives, insights and knowledge into new work for today’s new world.

This 3-step innovation formula will empower you to create magnetic solutions for your clients. On the flipside, if you’re lacking information, insight or inspiration don’t be surprised if no one bites.
